Benjamin Drummond - The First Patient

Naval Hospital New Orleans

This letter documents that Benjamin Drummond was taken to New Orleans aboard the USS Tennessee where he was admitted to the Naval Hospital on September 7, 1863, for treatment of the gun shot wound he suffered during the capture of the USS Morning Light. It also states that Drummond was discharged from the Hospital on November 12, 1864. This is a digital copy of the original record held by the National Archives.

In answer to your communication of the 18th instant, - I have to state that the "Journal of the U.S. Naval Hospital at New Orleans contains the following records. Viz -

"Sept. 7th 1863 - Benjamin Drummond O.S., aged 22, Nat. of N. York, Admitted from the U.S.S. Tennessee with stenosis of Tibia from gun shot wound received on the "Morning Light -".

Injury originated in the line of duty. (Signed) H.M. Wells, A Surg.

Nov. 12th 1864 - Discharged the Service" -
