USS Morning Light.

Houston, Texas, Feb. 10, 1864

Sir

The following is the list of casualties on board the late U.S. Ship "Morning Light" in the engagement of the 21st Jan '63, with Rebel "Cotton Clads" off Sabine Pass, Texas.

Killed: Patrick Ferlin, Seaman, by the explosion of a shell on the forward port gun, near the close of the action. He was buried with military honors Jan 22d, in Sabine City cemetery.

Fatally Wounded: Albert W. Marshall, ordinary Seaman. He died on the 27th last. A "post mortem" revealed that a fragment of shell, not larger than a flea, entered the right temple over the outer angle of the eye, passing directly backward through the brain, and lodging in the posterior extremity of the right hemisphere, just within the cranium. He was buried beside Furlin with the same honors.

Severly Wounded: Archibald McArthur, ord. Seaman, left arm broken near the shoulder joint, by a piece of shell, making a large flesh wound at the same time. The joint has been (illegible) with a fair prospect of the patient's recovery.
